WebP is a modern image format developed by Google in 2010, designed to provide superior compression for web images. WebP supports both lossy compression (like JPG but 25-35% smaller) and lossless compression (like PNG but 26% smaller), along with transparency and animation in a single format. The lossy mode uses VP8 video codec technology for efficient compression, while lossless mode uses a predictive algorithm. All major browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) and platforms now support WebP.
