XZ vs 7Z

7Z is an open-source archive format introduced with the 7-Zip archiver in 1999. 7Z uses the LZMA/LZMA2 compression algorithm, which provides significantly better compression ratios than ZIP or RAR — often 30-70% smaller archives for text and binary data. The format supports AES-256 encryption, solid compression, multi-threading, and file sizes up to 16 exabytes. 7Z can also use other compression methods including DEFLATE, BZIP2, and PPMd. While 7Z offers the best compression among common archive formats, it requires 7-Zip or compatible software and has slower compression/decompression speeds. 7Z is ideal for archiving large datasets, software distribution, and any scenario where minimizing file size is the top priority.
